Porsche Unveils The New 911 GT4 R: A New Era For Customer Racing And A Look Towards The Future Of The GTC Endurance Challenge

Porsche Motorsport has unveiled the new 911 GT4 R, the car set to take over from the 718 Cayman GT4 in the Stuttgart manufacturer’s customer racing programme. Based on the latest-generation 911 Cup platform (992.2 model), the new car marks a significant milestone in the brand’s history, as it brings its iconic sports car into the GT4 category for the first time.

The introduction of the 911 GT4 R represents a further evolution of Porsche’s customer motorsport strategy. After a decade of success with the Cayman family, which became a benchmark in major international GT4 competitions, the German manufacturer has chosen to develop a new car to continue that legacy, with its racing debut scheduled for the 2027 season.

From a technical standpoint, the new GT4 R is powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six engine producing up to 520 hp—an increase over the Cayman—paired with a sequential racing gearbox and rear-wheel drive. The project also benefits from significant chassis and vehicle dynamics improvements, including a wider track, dedicated suspension, aerodynamic updates and state-of-the-art electronics, with the aim of providing customer teams with an even more competitive and versatile package for both sprint and endurance racing.

The 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport therefore brings to a close a particularly significant ten-year chapter in Porsche Motorsport’s history. Since its debut, the car has established itself as one of the benchmark models in the GT4 category, standing out for its reliability, competitiveness and ease of operation. These qualities have made it a popular choice among private teams competing in the leading international and national GT4 championships.

The GTC Endurance Challenge, the GT4 championship promoted by RIZA International, also highlights the important role played by the Cayman in the customer racing landscape. During the inaugural 2026 season, the model is represented on the grid by two leading teams, Autorlando and Wimmer Werk Motorsport, confirming the long-standing relationship between Porsche and the customer teams competing in endurance racing.

The competitiveness of the 718 Cayman GT4 was further demonstrated during the second round of the season at the Slovakiaring, where Autorlando drivers Adriano Visdomini and Koray Kamiloglu secured the model’s first victory in the GTC Endurance Challenge, adding another success to the car’s impressive record in the new championship promoted by RIZA International.

The arrival of the 911 GT4 R now opens up new opportunities for the future. With its racing programme set to begin in 2027, the new model will gradually take over from the Cayman across the various international GT4 series. In this context, the GTC Endurance Challenge could also become an important platform for the deployment of the new car, continuing the successful collaboration between Porsche and its customer teams that already defines the championship’s GT4 category.
